Building closed Dec 30-31

All,

Last Friday we were supposed to use a sanitizing fog in the building donated by club VP Steve Hart. Given the weather, that did not happen. So we are going to do it this week. The club building will be closed this Friday, Dec 30th and Saturday, Dec 31st (to fog the building and allow it to completely dissipate). It is a food industry operation and leaves no residue. It does not harm the equipment so nothing needs to be moved or cleaned up.

Happy New Year !

Barn Hunt Questions Answered!!

What is Barn Hunt and how will classes at Gem City be run?

These are great questions!

Barn Hunt is a sport in which a course is built using hay bales, not necessarily in a barn. Live rats hidden in aerated tubes are then hidden on the course. Decoy tubes are also hidden.

The object is for the dog to use their senses to find the rats and indicate the rat to the handler.

Each course includes a tunnel constructed of bales. The number of bales, difficulty of tunnel and number of rats increase as the team advances.

It is a great sport! For those that are brand new to the sport, we will first introduce the dog to a rat and see how he/she reacts.  From there we will work to build your dog’s interest and drive to find the rat and work on other skills such as indication  and tunneling. For dogs that are experienced, we will work on issues that your dog may be having as they have progressed. New handlers can learn a lot by watching advanced dogs.

If you want to learn more you can check out Barnhunt.com, Barn Hunt Association Facebook page, Barn Hunt Association Rules Facebook Page or search for Barn Hunt videos of YouTube.
