Canine Respiratory Infectious Disease Awareness

Statement from AKC:

Canine Respiratory Infectious Disease Awareness

We are aware of the reports of Canine Respiratory Infectious Disease that caused some dogs at recent events to fall ill. While the cause is yet to be identified, some public information has indicated that the infection is viral in nature. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, nasal and/or eye discharge, and lethargy.

The health and safety of dogs at AKC events is the responsibility of each and every exhibitor. Exhibitors are responsible for monitoring the health of their dogs and should be mindful to keep any dog that has been exposed to sick dogs or that is exhibiting symptoms of illness at home.

Pursuant to AKC rules, “No dog with a communicable disease shall be on the show grounds or premises. Exhibitors should follow their veterinarian’s recommendations to ensure that their dogs are free of internal and external parasites, any communicable disease, and have appropriate vaccinations.”

It is important to be mindful and exercise caution to protect against Canine Respiratory Infectious Disease. Below are some tips to assist you.
The best protection is vaccination. Dogs should up to date on all core vaccines as well as Bordetella and bivalent influenza
Isolate sick animals and keep them isolated for up to 30 days after symptoms subside.
Practice good sanitation. Use a bleach and water mixture diluted to 1-part bleach x 30 parts water to disinfect common areas such as tables, bowls, leashes, crates, etc. Allow items to thoroughly air dry for a minimum of 10 minutes before exposing dogs to them.
Wash your hands frequently, ideally between handling different dogs. At the very minimum, hand sanitizer should be used between handling dogs.

Coyotes At The Land

Please remember that there are coyotes along with other wildlife out at the land. Always try to go with other members. The more people are there, the less likely they will come around. Always use caution and check your surroundings before allowing your dogs to run the whole area. Unfortunately, the best ways to trap them are going to be very appealing to our dogs too.

Volunteers Needed!

We are still looking for some volunteers to help with the Crossroads UKC Conformation Shows and Rally Trials this weekend!

You may be asking yourself why we are looking for volunteers for another club’s event. When Crossroads rents our building, they also rent our members! You will get hours towards your required Gem City hours for membership!

Why should you help? Firstly, it’s fun! You get to see all types of beautiful and uncommon breeds! Did you know that we had a Bedlington Terrier at our November shows? Such a cool breed to see in person! Secondly, this is a big show! Having these big shows helps Crossroads be able to hold the smaller shows that you enjoy!

Do you need to know anything about conformation? Nope! The judges will give you instructions on exactly what they need you to do. Or you can be in charge of helping us set up lunch or other duties around the building that day.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Angela at akp511@aol.com. Thank you!

Exit Only Doors

Please note that the doors marked “exit only” are to remain locked at all times! This is for the safety of you and your dogs. Do not unlock them!

Please be sure to check them if you are the last out at the end of your training session. Thank you!

Ashley Huehn

It is with a heavy heart that we announce on behalf of the Huehn family that Ashley Huehn has passed away. We ask that at this time, everyone give the family time to process this tragedy and adjust to life without such an amazing person. We will update you with more information as it becomes available.

Volunteer Opportunity

Crossroads Canine Club will be holding UKC Obedience and Rally Trials March 25th and 26th, 2023. These are pre-entry only and entries close on 3/17/22. Entries postmarked by 3/17/23 will also be accepted.

We will need 4 stewards per day for Rally and 3 stewards per day for Obedience. Please email me at tbrown2126@aol.com if you are able to steward for these trials.
